Deacs Prepare for Season Opener
February 17th, 2010

Despite the “unseasonably” cold and snowy weather, which has affected our first two contests, the 2010 Wake Forest lacrosse team is off to a promising start this spring season. Come out to Clemson this Sunday at 10:00 am to see Wake gear up for their season opener vs. Vanderbilt. Also, the postponed UNC Charlotte game will be rescheduled to a later date so check back for further updates.

Big Update
April 6th, 2009

After spring break Wake Forest returned to face Clemson at Kentner Stadium in Winston-Salem. Due to slack ball control and an impressive showing from the Tigers, the Deacs fell 11 to 8. The loss put Wake Forest at 1-2 in conference play headed into a home game versus Appalachian State. Wake got their feet under them in the App game, playing hard for four quarters, sustaining a consistent lead, and coming away with an 11 to 6 win. Last Friday the Deacs faced divisional rival South Carolina. To have any shot at the playoffs, Wake had to beat the Gamecocks convincingly. Under bold play from the attack, middies, defense, and goalie Matt Brazitis, the Deacs defeated South Carolina 14 to 8. The game was particularly meaning ful to the senior class, who stepped off of Kentner stadium for the last time after the win. Wake looks forward to the upcoming contest versus NC State on April 16th. In addition, the team will be watching the Clemson-South Carolina game (4/10), as an SC victory and an NC State win next week would likely send the Deacs to Atlanta for the SELC playoffs.

Deacs fall to Virginia Tech
March 4th, 2009

Wake Forest faced a strong Virginia Tech team last week in their season opener.  Under the leadership of Matt Brazitis, who racked up 20 saves, Wake Forest jumped out to a 1-0 lead.  Strong defensive play kept the game low scoring, with Virginia Tech edging the Deacs in the second quarter and ultimately by 1 goal in the game.  After Seth Bernstein (2 goals) brought the Deacs within 1 goal with 3 minutes, Wake Forest had the ball in a man-up situation with 1:15 left.  Despite the advantage, Wake couldn’t find the cage and the Hookies prevailed 6 to 5. Game ball went unquestionably to Matt Brazitis.

Wake Rolls Over ECU; Blazes Past Davidson; Continues Impressive Start
February 19th, 2009

The Wake Forest Men's lacrosse team defeated East Carolina last Saturday 15 to 7 in Greenville. Junior Goalie Matt Brazitis made a triumphant and in fact early return from a broken thumb injury. With 15 saves Braz posted an impressive .68 save percentage. Freshman Charlie Stanton continued his outstanding play with 6 goals and 3 assists. Brazitis and Stanton shared the game ball, as their strong play helped push Wake to 4-1, one of its best starts in program history.

Last night the Deacs faced Davidson in Kentner Stadium in Winston-Salem. Through strong offensive teamwork Wake pushed through the wet conditions to trump the Wildcats 16 to 3. Matt Brazitis continued dominant goalie play in the cage, with a total of 15 saves and only 3 goals allowed. The game ball went to the senior class, which despite four years of rivarly-embittered contests defeated Davidson for only the second time in its four years at Wake Forest. With the win against Davidson, Wake proceeds to 5-1 overall. The Deacs look forward to division rival Virginia Tech, who will come down to Winston next Saturday for a 2pm face.

Deacs Continue Solid Play: 1-1 in Knoxville over weekend
February 9th, 2009

Wake Forest defeated Kentucky 10-4 in Knoxville this past weekend. On a sunny Saturday Wake Forest came out strong, putting up a three-goal lead in the first half. With a solid ride and impressive clears, Wake held off a late charge by the Wildcats. Freshmen Ben Blais and Charlie Stanton notched two strong goals, while captain Rick Sullivan also put up two, his first of the season. On Sunday Wake played Tennessee, which outmatched the Deacs with a deep roster, sound fundamentals, and a resistance to mistakes. Despite a number of man-up opportunities, Wake failed to make any prolonged run against the Vols. Charlie Stanton, Ben Blais, and Ryan Almquist led the Deacons' offense. Wake starts out the season 3-1, with a Valentines Day shootout in Greenville versus East Carolina at 3pm on Saturday the 14th.

Deacs Escape Southern Virginia in Frigid Temperatures
February 6th, 2009

On a Frigid Thursday night Wake Forest escaped a small but feisty Southern Virginia Team. Junior Dave Wutzbacher led the Deacs with two goals, while fellow Junior Kenneth Coe and Freshman Ben Blais each racked up one goal. Freshman Charlie Stanton notched an assist, while goalie Max Struever helped stave off the pesky Knights. With a windchill hovering near zero, the Deacs were pleased to escape with a win and get ready for the weekend trip to Knoxville.

Deacs Start Season Strong; Take down UNC-Greensboro
January 30th, 2009

Playing on a chilly, frost-covered turf, Wake Forest beat UNC-Greensboro 16-2 in the opening game of the season last night. Goalie Max Streuver led the defense, while Wake's offense, consisting of a strong cast of upperclassmen and freshmen, racked up more than a dozen goals with 10 different players scoring. The game ball went to freshman attackmen Alex Hoes, who scored three goals. Wake's middies also had a strong showing, accounting for 6 goals and 8 assists. With a 38-man roster, the Deacs looks to continue the opening game's success next Thursday versus Southern Virginia in Kentner Stadium at 7:30pm.

October 7, 2008

In the opening game of the fall season Wake Forest fell to the Davidson wildcats. The contest was a huge growing experience, and Wake built on lessons learned in the UNC-Charlotte game a week later. Deacs down Marquette in Wet Contest
March 21, 2008

The Marquette Golden Eagles traveled to play Wake Forest last Thursday. Although the thunder and lighting held off, torrential ran made for an interesting first half. While the game was close for the first 30 minutes, the Deacs pulled ahead in the second half for a 13 to 7 victory. With 25+ saves, Goalie Matt Brazitis was the just recipient of the game ball. The Deacs will return to conference play in two weeks versus N.C. State at Ketner Stadium on Thursday, April 3 at 7pm.

Deacs go 1-2 in 3-game stretch
February 29, 2008

Wake Forest jumped out to an early 4-0 lead on the Davidson Wildcats. After a huge run, however, Davidson came back to tie the Deacs. The fourth quarter was full of excitement, as the two teams traded goals back and forth. Davidson pulled through in the end, holding off nearly 3 shots in the last minute, including one that hit the right post.

Wake Forest played Elon on Friday night in Winston-Salem. The game seemed to be one-sided early, as Wake jumped to a 6-0 lead before halftime. Despite this momentum, Elon come back with force in the second half to tie and eventually go on to win 8-7.

Wake Forest and ECU played Sunday afternoon in Winston-Salem. After trading goals back and forth, the Deacs jumped out quietly to a 5 goal lead to end the game 10-5. The ECU game win was critical, as it keeps playoffs in the Deacs' sights. Wake Forest finished their stretch of 3 games with 1 win and 2 losses, bringing the season count to 1-3. Upcoming games include Tennessee and Clemson this weekend.

Deacs Suffer Opening Setback
February 11, 2008

Wake Forest struggled in their opener versus Pittsburgh to perform cohesively and produce a strong defense or an aggressive offense. Wake lost 12-1 in the road trip, with Bill Keenan scoring the only goal for the Deacs. Although Wake's play improved as the game progressed, they could not rebound from the huge deficit. They look forward to a new week of practice and a big week of contests starting with Davidson next wednesday.
